How your connection is encrypted
We connected to our Switzerland server on October 8, 2026 and copied two lines from the OpenVPN log: the TLS handshake on the control channel and the cipher the server assigns to your traffic.
TLSv1.2, ECDHEThe control channel that sets up the connection. ECDHE creates fresh keys for every session, so old traffic stays safe even if a key leaks later.AES-256-GCMThe cipher that encrypts your traffic itself. Every user connects with the same server settings, so a connection isn’t tied to an account.
OpenVPN 3 runs over UDP in Fast mode or TCP in Safe mode. WireGuard support is planned.
What United VPN stores, and what it doesn’t
This list matches our privacy policy. If the app changes what it collects, we update both on the same day.
We store
- Crash reports from Firebase Crashlytics: device model, iOS and app version, a random install ID. Kept 90 days, no browsing data.
- Usage analytics, only if you turn on Share Usage Data. It’s off by default.
- Your ad consent choice in the EEA, UK and Switzerland (free version).
We never store
- Websites and apps you use, or the content of your traffic
- DNS queries
- Your IP address, original or inside the VPN
- Connection times and session length
- How much data you use
- Your name, email, phone number or payment details
Ads in the free version come from Google AdMob and are non-personalized unless you turn on Share Usage Data. Google processes ad data under its own policy. You can change your choice any time in the app menu. Premium has no ads.
